Former Turkish Airlines (THY) chief Mehmet İlker Aycı was appointed as the new CEO of Air India,
Tata Group announced on Monday.
“Ilker Ayci will be the new CEO & MD of Air India and we are delighted to welcome him on board. This appointment is subject to requisite regulatory approvals,” stated Tata Sons in a recent release.
Commenting on this appointment, N. Chandrasekaran the Chairperson of Tata Sons group, described Aycı IIker as an aviation industry leader who led the Turkish Airlines to its current success during his tenure.”
It was learnt, Tata Sons were in search of right CEO and they had begun the quest much before the airline was officially handed over to them. It was also largely speculated earlier that the top position could go to former British Airways CEO Alex Cruz.
The official announcement confirms that Ayci’s appointment is subject to requisite regulatory approvals and that he is likely to join AI by first of week of April.
Ayci had joined Turkish Airlines in year 2015 and had played key role in propelling the carrier through COVID 19 efficiently. Under his leadership, the airline had posted a profit despite pandemic and prolonged travel restrictions.
